When you're looking at energy sources or fuel sources, it's important to understand how they're measured. The British Thermal Unit (BTU) is a way to measure the heat content of these sources. Basically, it's the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of a pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. This is important because it's how we figure out the heating value of different fuel sources.

Propane is a type of fuel that belongs to the hydrocarbon family. It's commonly known as Liquified Petroleum Gas or LP. This fuel comes from liquid components when processing natural gas. Those components include methane, ethane, and butane, as well as heavier hydrocarbons.

Propane is a refined fossil fuel, which means it's made during the process of refining other chemicals. Once the propane is isolated, it’s pressurized to keep it in its liquid form. This makes it easier to store and transport.

Physical Properties of Propane Gas

Propane is made up of 3 carbon molecules and 8 hydrogen molecules. It gives off a lot of heat too – around 24,2000 BTUs per liter! That's more than twice as much as natural gas. Propane is also heavier than air, weighing in at about 1.808 kilograms per cubic meter. This means that if there's any extra propane gas around, it'll sink or pool.

One thing to keep in mind is that propane is easier to ignite than natural gas. It'll catch fire at a temperature of 1,076 degrees Fahrenheit, which is lower than the ignition temperature for natural gas. Another thing to note is that propane burns a bit dirtier than natural gas because it has more carbon molecules.

If you're using propane, you'll need to make sure there's enough air around it for proper combustion. You'll need about 24 cubic feet of air for every cubic foot of propane – that's more than double the ratio of air needed for natural gas. It's important to keep all of these things in mind when you're working with propane.

What are the byproducts of combustion from Propane Gas?

When propane is burned completely, it produces carbon dioxide and water vapor. But if there's not enough oxygen present during the combustion process, it can result in the formation of carbon monoxide – which is definitely not what you want. So it's really important to make sure that there's enough air mixing happening when you're burning propane. This will ensure that it's burned completely, without any harmful byproducts.
